Today is the start of the 2009 National Identity Fraud Prevention Week - a nationwide effort to help in the battle against identity fraud.
Identity Fraud is one of the UK’s fastest growing crimes affecting individuals. Research shows that consumers and businesses are not aware of, or not taking the steps they could and should be taking to fully protect themselves.
There are now a few companies offering an identity theft protection service in return for a small monthly fee or annual charge. There are some basic things you should know and do:
Check your credit report - this is the first place to check if you are already a victim.
Keep your passwords secret - it does sounds obvious but some people have the same password for a lot of things.
Check you bank statements regularly
Shred important documents, don’t just bin them
Never include financial information in e-mails or respond to unsolicited emails the claim they are from a large institution such as banks.
Look at our review table for the benefits of the services available to you.
